O Happy Band

Comedy in Two Acts

by Mike Hasshill

Published by High View, ISBN 978-0-948802-47-8, A5, 42pp, softback, staple bound.

This is one of four Cornish plays by Mike Hasshill.

The author describes this as “a slight comedy”. Set in about 1900, at a remote Cornish pub that is trying to cash-in on the burgeoning tourist trade, it concerns one of the icons of Cornish culture – the brass band. Who is the judge for the competition? Is there even to be a competition? Will Sam fulfil his ambition to play before the Prince of Wales? (Don’t give the ending away!)

The play runs for somewhat under an hour and a half, and may be produced either in arena or a divided set on stage. It is very suitable for a professional company or amateur group as a light, summery piece of theatre. The play requires five men and seven women, with accents ranging from Cornish to German, via Welsh, Yorkshire and posh English!

The North Cornwall Theatre Company, who invited lay actors from around Cornwall to perform in the play, originally produced it in arena during the 1982 summer season at Tintagel.

The other Cornish plays by Mike Hasshill are:

Tamsyn Tremaine
The Improbably History of Doniert - King of Cornwall
The Penstock Rite
