The Improbable History of Doniert - King of Cornwall

Comedy in Two Acts

by Mike Hasshill

Published by High View, ISBN 978-0-948802-46-1, A5, 52pp, softback, staple bound.

This is one of four Cornish plays by Mike Hasshill.

Doniert was, perhaps, the last man to bear the title of King of Cornwall. Apart from his memorial stone near Liskeard, little is known about him apart from his friendship with Alfred; his great piety; and his probable drowning in the River Fowey. This comedy fills in some very improbable details, poking light-hearted fun at Cornish, English, Welsh and Irish characters.

Set at Liskeard in 878 AD, Doniert is in his dotage, seeking to marry-off his somewhat fey daughter. None of the suitors suit. We are not sure whether she goes off to found a sailor’s refuge or a somewhat different house for the comfort of seamen.

There are eight male and six female roles, each one important and capable of development.

The North Cornwall Theatre Company, who invited lay actors from around Cornwall to perform in the play, originally produced it in arena during the 1981 summer season at Tintagel. It is suitable for a professional or amateur company. The running time is approximately one and a half hours.

The other Cornish plays by Mike Hasshill are:

Tamsyn Tremaine
O Happy Band
The Penstock Rite
